Description

The OSHA's 1910.146 standard has been in place for over 25 years. Unfortunately, workers continue to lose their lives unnecessarily in confined space incidents. The landscape of confined space entry is constantly evolving with the introduction of new guidelines and standards, including OSHA's Construction version, NFPA's Guide for Safe Confined Space Entry & Work, and ASSE's Z117.1. This PDC will contrast and compare the four critical documents used for confined space entry, in the U.S. and internationally. We will assess how to effectively utilize the information from these documents to a series of unique/ODD BALL confined spaces. The course will feature in-depth, interactive case studies and group workshops. These activities will be designed to assist participants in recognizing, classifying, and planning entries and work within complex and atypical confined spaces. Attendees will be encouraged to share digital photos and case studies of confined spaces, as part of the course discussions.

In-person participants: *Registration includes boxed luncheon. **Power strips will not be provided at each attendee's seat; however, charging stations for laptops will be provided in each course room.

Course Outline

• OSHA's PRCS General Industry Standard
• OSHA's Construction Standard
• NFPA's 350 Guide
• ASSE Z117
• Extensive Review and Discussion of Identification of Questionable and Complex Confined Spaces
• Group Exercises/Activities
• Video Case Study of a Very Unique and Complex Confined Space

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Differentiate between various confined space regulations and standards.
• Compare the various requirements and recommendations.
• Utilize existing standards and best practices to evaluate Odd Ball confined spaces.
• Apply the regulations and standards to various Odd Ball confined spaces for safe entry.
• Analyze and discuss elements of complex confined spaces.
• Use alternate entry strategies to make spaces safe prior to entry.
• Determine the classify/reclassify for confined spaces to eliminate hazards prior to entry.
• Evaluate spaces to determine the best answer for entry when rescue services are not available.

Prerequisites

Participants should review the contents of "29 CFR 1910.146, OSHA Subpart AA Confined Spaces in the Construction (1926), ASSE "Z117.1-2016", and NFPA "350-2016".

Value Added

Participants will receive in-depth insight into the complexity of confined spaces and access to OSHA letters of interpretation and compliance directives. Attendees will be able to submit real-world scenarios and have experts and classmates work to solve complex and difficult confined space entry issues.

Business Case/IH Value Statement

Attendees will be able to use strategies discussed to reduce risk involved in their PRCS entry operations.
