If you never have questions about confined spaces, you probably do not deal with them. Confined spaces are more complicated than their simple definition suggests (i.e., limited openings for entry or exit, large enough for a person to physically enter, and not designed for continuous occupancy). Once you start working with confined spaces, the questions start coming. Is it permit-required? How can you make the entry easier? Can you get by without rescuers on standby? How do you know if your fire department is qualified to do confined space rescues? Do you need to ventilate? What qualifications are necessary for someone to serve as the entry supervisor? In this interactive education session, we will answer these questions and more. The primary goal is to encourage questions from the participants. This session is not intended to be an introduction to confined spaces or the associated standards. Instead, this is a chance to ask questions from the basic to complex of people who have experience and expertise in confined spaces.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Evaluate whether a given space is a permit-required confined space.
• Describe the limitations of meters used for confined space entry.
• Explain what must be done to reclassify a space.
• Identify the confined spaces in a facility.
• Discuss how to enter confined spaces safely.
