Description

Over the past three decades, Control Banding has emerged as a prominent H&S approach, leading to some countries legislating its use. As a result, workforces are reaping the benefit of reduced worker illnesses and a more informed knowledge. As industrial hygienists, there is an urgent need to learn from these experiences. Where the use of control banding concepts is not yet mandated by law, IHs can proactively plan when to best leverage control banding concepts to make workplaces safer. This presentation will discuss: a) how to implement control banding as semi-qualitative risk assessment tool; and b) how to set budget and resource priorities (i.e., take measurements, implement new controls, or assess effectiveness of existing controls). You can leverage control banding to the hilt by effectively communicating control banding results and opportunities with site supervisors and joint health and safety committee members. Involving them in the development of hazard awareness training material and control efficacy checklists will enhance their understanding along with a sense of ownership of an organization's H&S program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Recognize the benefits of control banding in reducing workplace exposures.
• Leverage control banding methodologies to determine follow-up actions.
• Re-design sampling strategies to focus on high- to medium-risk health hazards.
• Introduce the use of checklists when reviewing the efficacy of controls.
