The goal and purpose of any H&S program is the health and safety of the people involved. Health and safety is an ever changing and complicated matrix of professional norms, federal and state regulations, voluntary standards, organizational criteria, scientific research, and best practice. What are the principles of good practice (PGP) that these programs use? PGP defines the minimum expected principles of practice and performance established for a particular profession or function. The criteria can vary by industry, practice, and even by individual. In assessing the guidelines, science, and proven effectiveness, as defined by the AIHA PGP Advisory group, PGP falls somewhere between the legally enforceable guidelines and the state of the art cutting edge technology. PGP considers not only compliance but also contractual terms and the concepts of negligence and malpractice. PGP comes back to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards, placing emphasis on action (what to do) rather than what one knows (competencies). This education session will discuss the definition, implementation, and comparison of what PGP means, from legal, regulatory, and industry perspective, as well as from the perspective of the AIHA PGP Advisory group. The panel will both educate and seek input from the audience on what PGP means to IHs and in daily practice.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Explain the definitions associated with Principles of Good Practice.
• Apply a principle of good practice in risk management programs.
• Provide professional insight to the AIHA Principle of Good Practice Advisory Group.
