The aim of this education session is to provide an overview of the various types of OEHS issues that are typically encountered at a large university. To name a few, these issues include asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, air permitting, stormwater permitting, chemical spills, respirable dust, decommissioning, gas leaks, and blood spills. The EHS department may partner with various diverse customers (e.g., medical center, operations, student life, academics, utilities, athletics and design and construction) to address these concerns. Presentation topics will include: a) internal processes relative to compliance with EPA, OSHA, and local regulations; b) chemical exposures; c) work specific training; d) chemical spills; e) PPE; f) employee injuries and illnesses; g) IAQ issues; h) shop safety; i) lack of hazard awareness; j) resistance to change; k) budget constraints; and l) culture.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Discuss OEHS issues prevalent at a large university.
• Recognize environmental and industrial hygiene issues encountered at a large university.
• Review environmental and IH issues with stakeholders, consultants and contractors.
• Outline how a large university works to maintain a proactive safety culture.
