Projects containing investigations into smoke and odors can be extremely challenging. Many stakeholders believe that simply taking a sample and obtaining laboratory results will provide the answers, which is often far from reality. The Sampling and Laboratory Analysis Committee (SLAC) is conducting this session to provide an international perspective (the OEHS Professional and the IH laboratory), on how to approach these investigations and explain the concepts and challenges to stakeholders. This session will: 1) discuss the process and considerations the OEHS professional can take in selecting a sampling strategy; 2) address the benefits and limitations of the sampling methods; and 3) explain the reasons that the evacuated canister or real-time particulate measurement device are not always helpful choices. Since quality assurance is critical to both sampling and analysis, the SLAC Quality Sampling Manual will be introduced as a tool for obtaining defensible data for sampling and analysis of particulates and VOCs. There will be a Q&A section and open discussion to obtain perspectives from attendees.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Assess if sampling will provide useful data for the odor/smoke investigation.
• Identify the benefits and limitations of the common sampling methods.
• Incorporate sampling quality considerations on these projects.
