Description

Musculoskeletal disorders affect 50% of working adults and 80% of the aging worker. These ailments represent the top cost in both workers' compensation and personal medical care. To protect workers' health and enhance well-being, The NIOSH Total Worker Health® (TWH) is a systems approach for looking more broadly at work conditions. This session will: a) describe the integrated TWH approach to musculoskeletal health; b) explain the role that the IH can play supporting this perspective; and c) highlight several innovative strategies to break down silos between the IH and Safety, Wellness and Workers' Compensation, thus driving better outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Describe the TWH approach.
• Identify the defining elements to promote musculoskeletal health.
• Determine best practices for job descriptions, movement based exams and transitional work.
• Explain how IHs can address musculoskeletal health by collaborating with other OEHS professionals.
