In the U.S., half a million correctional officers are responsible for supervising more than two million adults in custody. The general public typically defines correctional employees as just those who oversee incarcerated individuals. Correctional professionals also include: adults in custody workers, utilities technicians, IT professionals, medical and social workers, food management personnel, and maintenance workers who are necessary for the effective operation of a correctional facility. The hazards in correctional facilities differs from any other public or governmental institutions due to several unique occupational hazards including: 1) assaults and violence; 2) exposure to infectious diseases; 3) mental health stress; 4) manipulation by adults in custody; and 5) musculoskeletal injuries. It is crucial to recognize and address these hazards to ensure the well-being and safety of correctional professionals.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Identify health and safety challenges in correctional occupational settings.
• Conduct hazard recognition and assessments in correctional facilities.
• Assess chemical hazards like oleoresin capsicum spray and other occupational chemicals.
• Recognize how to mitigate these hazards and make realistic control recommendations.
