Description

The OSHA standard, 29 CFR 1910.1450, Occupational Exposures to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories, mandates laboratories to have a written Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP). The plan must ensure laboratory chemical fume hoods and other protective equipment are functioning properly. It outlines specific measures that shall be taken to ensure proper and adequate performance of such equipment. While most colleges and universities have programs in place to meet the fume hood portion of the CHP, the other protective equipment is typically not addressed in the program. This presentation will highlight the scope and challenges associated with these other exposure control devices found in laboratories as experienced by two different universities (Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Kentucky). In addition, the session will include learnings and best practices obtained from a presentation at the Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA, an AIHA Alliance Partner) 2023 Conference.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Describe exposure control devices found in university laboratories.
• Review and use management experiences of two large research institutions.
• Identify challenges to managing the performance of these control devices.
• Illustrate and summarize lessons learned and best practices.
• Provide a framework for a program to evaluate other protective equipment.
