Description

Have you ever had a safety conversation where you wonder just where the other person is coming from? When we have safety conversations, we assume that everyone involved has the same fundamental underlying understanding of some core principles. Unfortunately, when those understandings are different, conflict and confusion result. These concepts include 1) the role of chance; 2) the reality of common sense; 3) physical and cognitive limits of human performance; 4) the difference between risk and hazard; 5) risk perception and tolerance; and 6) aspects of motivation. If we recognize the concepts going unsaid and when there is a potential conflict with them, we can guide safety conversations into more productive outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• List six core concepts that affect safety communications.
• Recognize the role of individual risk tolerance in assessing acceptable risk.
• Identify limitations of human performance.
