When thinking about film set health and safety, what comes to mind first? Is it the action-packed stunts or the explosive special effects or the on-set injuries and fatalities that have made the recent headlines? The world of production safety is an extensive one. Filming on location brings about some fairly unique hazards. But it's what you can't see that can have the greatest impact on set health and safety. Examples of H&S hazards that may be encountered on location are: a) old structures with lead paint and asbestos; b) mold growth and structural damage caused by water and/or neglect; c) undesirable animal or human activity. This session will present the following topics: 1) the planning and pre-filming risk assessment processes to avoid surprises; 2) the potential gaps in (EHS) measures; 3) how cleanup processes can be highly regulated, expensive and time consuming. H&S considerations apply not only to what we see on camera, but also to the overall production. Learn how to ensure any media production has the right resources in place to support EHS concerns during planning, prep, filming, and tear-down.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Collect context-setting data points for a production or event location.
• Identify EHS concerns with on-location film productions and unique event spaces.
• Establish go/no-go criteria for a selected location.
• Describe the risk assessment elements to select appropriate controls.
• Perform a cost-benefit analysis for implementing controls/remedies.
• Communicate risks and controls to the production or event team.
