Education Session
Greater Columbus Convention Center
Room: A 213
CM Credit Hours: 1
Unforeseen design and use considerations can have a severe and costly OEHS impact on operations. This education session will present three scenarios in which poor design or decision making affected the habitability of a commercial or residential space. The three cases include: a) entrainment of odors into a retail store; b) improper use of chemicals to clean an air filtration system; and c) unexpected results when repurposing an old industrial building for residential use. The presentation will discuss: 1) how psycho-social factors can come into the situations; 2) the investigations and control measures involved (e.g., engineering controls, tracer gas technology, irritant neutralization); and 3) the importance of gaining information through interviews.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Evaluate engineering control measures using tracer gas technology.
• Explain how psychosocial factors can affect odor perceptions in the workplace.
• Use effective interviewing techniques to elicit solutions.
• Identify the effects of airborne chemicals even at very low concentrations.
• Anticipate odor and irritant issues related to re-purposing an industrial site.
