As a career OEHS professional and occupational hygienist, one of my core values has been to actively engage with cross functional teams and understand the core manufacturing processes of the business areas that I have supported. In taking that mindset to the extreme, I took on a development role as a manufacturing section manager. Stepping outside my comfort zone to develop my leadership capabilities in a non-OEHS position. Overseeing the scheduling, coordination, and execution of a pharmaceutical packaging and assembly operation, while managing employees taught me valuable lessons on how to be a better OEHS professional and renewed my understanding of the value that our profession offers. The purpose of this session is to use the lessons learned to provide insights and knowledge to OEHS professionals who work in manufacturing environments. Key concepts to be explored include: a) establishing OEHS credibility; b) operations empathy; c) leadership and worker communication; d) uplifting the workers' voices; and e) recognizing the value an OEHS professional brings to the business.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Suggest opportunities to improve OEHS professional credibility.
• Develop empathy for operations leadership through shared experiences.
• Enhance communication skills to facilitate OEHS improvements.
• Recognize the value of an OEHS professional.
