Marijuana/cannabis legislation continues to shift towards legalization as more states implement decriminalization, medical use, or fully legalized use (including recreational sales). Historically, the marijuana industry was not a legitimate consideration for most safety professionals due to its primarily illegal use and distribution. As this industry continues to evolve, its growth, sales, and workforce are set to continue climbing upward. Employee safety must be considered for this emerging industry, despite the existence of unique challenges. This education session will examine: a) the basics of the cannabis industry; b) the current status of U.S. legalization and regulations; c) the workforce; d) the processes; and e) the known H&S hazards in the industry. There will be an in-depth examination of safety and health risks associated with specific job roles and facilities. Case studies and current research will explore the challenges and solutions for H&S risks. The presentation will conclude with an interactive discussion on relevant topics including how, as OEHS professionals, we can guide and exert influence on this nuanced industry and protect the safety of its employees.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Identify the H&S challenges in the cannabis industry.
• Explain the risks and hazards involved cannabis cultivation, distribution, and sale.
• Suggest control solutions for hazards to the employees in cannabis operations.
