Description

The WELL Building Standard (WELL) and LEED are performance-based systems for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of the built environment that impact human health and well-being. They both have been around for over a decade and has since gained widespread recognition as a leading framework for designing healthier buildings, especially with the increased attention on ESG issues.

The purpose of this pop up presentation is to provide an overview of what WELL and LEED are and how industrial hygienists fit into the picture.

Industrial hygienists have a valuable role to play in this process. Their expertise in assessing and controlling environmental hazards aligns with several aspects of WELL and LEED, particularly within the Air and Comfort concepts. Here are a few of the concepts that industrial hygienists can participate in and will be reviewed in this presentation:

1. Indoor Air Quality
2. Water Quality
3. Thermal Comfort
4. Acoustic Comfort
5. Indoor Contaminant Control
6. Occupant Surveys and Feedback

These building standards can help in advancing the adoption of healthier building practices worldwide. Industrial hygienists, with their expertise in assessing and controlling environmental hazards, are well-suited to contribute to the successful implementation of WELL or LEED. By participating, industrial hygienists can help create built environments that prioritize the health and well-being of occupants, ultimately leading to a more sustainable and healthier future for all.

Learning Outcomes

Attendees should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge/skills:

1. Have an overall understanding of the WELL Building Standard, LEED, its concepts, and purpose.
2. Be able to describe of how thresholds, concentrations, and exposure values were created for WELL and LEED
