In this session we will start our journey by window shopping through history to better understand the develop of nuclear technology and its impact on the development of nuclear power. Why does this matter? Simply, by better understanding its history, you will become a better student of its risks during the end of life cycle decommissioning and eventual demolition. Well-built they are, dare say indestructible, the challenges to return the spaces they occupy to "green fields" can be daunting for a "normal" nuclear plant. Decommissioning a plant closed under adverse conditions can be tantalizingly difficult. The bulk of this session will present a survey of the nuclear decommissioning process high-lighting the unique industrial hygiene challenges accosting the decommissioning team from spent fuel removal to the placement of the last shovel of dirt in the empty field. Unique solutions to challenging problems through every de-construction phase will be presented with brief stop-overs to discuss applications of unique cutting-edge technologies to solve other-worldly problems (think drones, robotics and a dog named "spot"). This session will not disappoint as the future for nuclear deconstruction is well upon us. Just remember... as good and beneficial nuclear power is for our society as is reflected in the number of plants currently being built and planned for the future,..eventually, they all must come down…. Will you be ready?
Upon completion, the participant will..
1. Establish an understanding of the development of nuclear power, and its relational impact on the decommissioning and demolition process.
2. Develop an understanding the end-of-life phase of nuclear decommissioning, and the unique industrial hygiene risks encountered and solutions to match.
3. Learn about the application of technologies to manage risk and solve unique health challenges during decommissioning.
4. Be presented with a forward look of the nuclear deconstruction industry and how we can be better prepared for the challenges of the future to come.
