Description

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers are often fluorinated to impart barrier properties and protect against permeation. Although no poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used, the fluorination process may produce trace amounts of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) as impurities on the containers. Potential exposure to workers handling the fluorinated HDPE containers is most likely from incidental ingestion associated with hand-to-mouth transfer of PFCAs from gloves. This study developed a novel method for directly measuring PFCA amounts on the glove fingertips. These measurements were then used to assess the risk of overexposure to these workers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
- apply this novel exposure assessment method of measuring PFCAs from glove fingertips and
- incorporate the analytical measurements in assessing risk of PFCA exposures to workers via hand-to-mouth transfer.
