Description

Laboratory scientists serve an integral role in a variety of industries including health care, academia, research and law enforcement organizations throughout the country. Scientists work in laboratories handling a variety of known and unknown hazards including acids, bases, particulates, gasses, vapors, radiological substances, pathogens, and viruses. Working in a laboratory poses both well-characterized and novel risks to the health of scientists. As these workers are exposed to these chemical, biological, and physical safety hazards, the key to protecting the health of laboratory scientists is anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational hazards. The development and implementation of a Laboratory Health and Safety Plan is essential in this endeavor.

I will discuss (1) the hazards of working in a laboratory, (2) the components and implementation of an effective Laboratory Health and Safety Plan including a Chemical Hygiene Plan, and (3) the hierarchy of controls and how to use it in a laboratory setting. I will also provide resources to aid in the development of a Laboratory Health and Safety Plan.

This session is not available for contact hours.
