Description

Hazard identification is an important part of protecting worker health and safety. Training workers on how to identify hazards is a key component of all health and safety programs. Results from previous NIOSH research show that mineworkers at all experience levels differ in their hazard recognition and risk assessment abilities relative to health and safety (H&S) professionals. To ensure that workers can identify workplace hazards, NIOSH developed an interactive training tool called EXAMiner. Based on proven training strategies, EXAMiner is a currently available, no-cost software application that gives workers the opportunity to improve their knowledge of hazards and their hazard recognition skills through practice. Using the software, workers examine a simulated work environment for hazards. After completing the search, workers are provided feedback on their performance along with information they can use to reinforce their hazard knowledge. Feedback from both H&S professionals and workers who have used the software indicates that EXAMiner promotes engagement by providing an opportunity for interaction and discussion during training which can enhance the learning experience. Originally designed with mining workplace in mind, EXAMiner includes a set of panoramic images of a surface stone mine for H&S professionals to use to develop hazard recognition materials. This tool can also be used in any workplace or industry as EXAMiner gives H&S professionals the opportunity to create site-specific materials by uploading pictures of their own worksite and locations. During this presentation, NIOSH will provide a demonstration of EXAMiner's capabilities and offer insights and ideas on how to incorporate EXAMiner into your H&S program.

This session is not available for contact hours.
