Description

For over 5 decades, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed research and provided resources to address safety and health hazards in the workplace. NIOSH recommendations and guidance are available in a broad variety of health communication products targeted for multiple industries and audiences. Examples of these products include comprehensive assessments of chemicals and occupations in criteria documents, current intelligence bulletins, and technical reports. NIOSH reports also include concise assessments of specific hazards in the form of Workplace Solutions, Fact Sheets, posters, and infographics. One of the most widely known and used products is the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards (NPG) which contains relevant and practical information and guidance for nearly 700 chemicals. The NPG is especially useful for emergency responders, hazardous materials specialists, and other safety and health practitioners. Updates to the NPG and other NIOSH resources will be described in this session, as well as concepts related to the NIOSH Prevention through Design (PtD) initiative. The premise for PtD is the recognition that one of the best strategies to prevent and control occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities is to "design out" or minimize hazards and risks. Examples of current NIOSH research areas, resources, and tools for occupational hygiene professionals will be described with information about how to obtain all products free of charge.

This session is not available for contact hours.
