Description

Resin Acid (Colophony) has received significant attention in the UK over the past several decades. This asthmagen and sensitizer has been largely ignored in the U.S. until the ACGIH committee adopted a TLV of 0.001 mg/m3 (Inhalable fraction) in 2020. This session will explore: 1) the differences between the UK and TLV limits in terms of sampling and analytical methods; and 2) resin acids through the lens of the ARECC model. Topics will include: a) industries and processes that use resin acid-containing products (e.g., electronics manufacturing, cosmetics); b) diseases associated with resin acid exposure; c) field collection techniques; d) species-specific analysis vs derivatization; e) the problem of resin acid oxides; f) alternative products; g) engineering controls; and h) issues with PPE.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Assess resin acid exposures in the workplace.
• Distinguish the pros and cons of the analytical methods for resin acid analysis.
• Differentiate the nuances of the UK and TLV limits.
• Evaluate LEV controls.
