Description

The International Sampler Comparison Group (ISCG) consortium are international experts who have agreed to develop a research plan for laboratory and workplace-based studies for the assessment of aerosol sampling devices performance. This work was initially based on needs identified in the metal industry; but has implications for industrial hygiene aerosol sampling methods across other industries. The outcomes of several projects will be discussed, including (1) consensus recommendations for aerosol sampling within the metals industries; (2) validation results of a multi-fraction sampler for inhalable and respirable dust mass/metals; (3) the development of a sampler selection tool; (4) performance of conventional and real-time aerosol samplers in Western Australian mining environments; and (5) laboratory protocol development and related field studies performed in the U.S. and EU.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Discuss why aerosol samplers used to collect exposure data give different results.
• Determine why laboratory studies need to be supplemented by field comparisons.
• Design the requirements of an aerosol sampler used for exposure assessments.
