Description

The Hazard and Operability Study (HazOp) has a unique history in the evolution of the hazard analysis profession. Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals (29 CFR 1910.119) and Chemical Accident Prevention Provisions [Risk Management Program] (40 CFR Part 68) specifically name the HazOp as an "appropriate methodology to determine and evaluate the hazards of the process being analyzed." If the HazOp is codified within regulations, why question the validity and use of this hazard evaluation technique? This session questions the validity, appropriateness, and use of the HazOp as the traditional and go-to hazard evaluation technique. Topics will include: 1) a brief history and development timeline of the HazOp hazard evaluation technique; 2) a high-level overview; 3) visual HazOp examples; 4) specific benefits; and 5) common mistakes encountered with the HazOp. There will be an opportunity for brief discussion and comments, along with lessons learned from hazard analysis expertise and a library of references.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Summarize the development of the Hazard and Operability Study (HazOp).
• Identify situations where the HazOp is appropriate.
• Distinguish where HazOp may not be the appropriate hazard evaluation tool.
