Description

This session will present an overview of community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches. Two case studies will show how they can be integrated into occupational and environmental health practice to address environmental health disparities. The first case study will feature a project involving a partnership between a Somali community-based organization and a Vietnamese social services organization in Minnesota. These partners will develop technical assistance to promote safer practices among underserved immigrant salon workers. The second case study will highlight challenges conducting exposure assessment activities with rural and Native American populations. This includes the time to build relationships, community buy-in, effective recruitment/retention, lack of infrastructure, and ensuring cultural sensitivity of methods and forms of communication. Best practices for how to report exposure information to tribal populations will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Recognize community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles.
• Identify three benefits of CBPR approach.
• Apply CBPR principles in OEHS practice.
