Mining is a high risk sector from the perspective of health and well-being. Mining requires a healthy, robust pool of human capital to operate and sustain its production and key investments. Current data on the health of miners indicates that the mining sector needs to improve prevention of occupational disease and worker well-being. There are hazards specific to mining that impact the health and well-being of its workers that require further study to better understand these hazards and associated controls. This presentation will focus on the successful investment into research of OH and hygiene by a global mining company and their engaged workforce. Attendees will receive information on: a) shared experiences; b) forecasted future needs; c) references; and d) how to build lasting relationships (partnerships) to support the effort. Reference will be made to health and hygiene examples where much work is to be done to support mining's human capital and opportunities to apply approaches like Total Worker Health®.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Illustrate how OH research ties into the Total Worker Health® initiative.
• Explore strategies for relationships with research/educational organizations.
• Establish research partnerships.
• Distinguish positive outcomes created with partnerships.
• Recognize mining-specific hazards where research can support partners.
