All workers are entitled to a safe work environment, not only physically but also mentally. This education session will focus on the mental health challenges that museum staff and cultural heritage workers face. Members of the AIHA's Museum and Cultural Heritage Industry Working Group, are currently working to better understand these complex and often invisible mental stresses. Presenters will discuss: 1) results from NIOSH-funded study of stress and psychological trauma in museum workers; 2) issues from working closely with trauma heritage in memorial museums; and 3) results of a membership survey on mental health issues through the American Institute for Conservation's (AIC) Health and Safety Network.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Identify the factors impacting the mental health of museum and cultural heritage workers.
• Relate psychosocial factors to OEHS and the cultural heritage sector.
• Recognize mental health issues not encountered during traditional IH practice.
• Evaluate how trauma issues impact museum and cultural heritage workers.
• Discuss IH opportunities to interact with the cultural heritage sector.
