OSHA's proposed heat stress rule promotes a program-based standard. The heart of the standard is the Heat Illness and Injury Prevention Plan (HIIPP). Program management can be viewed as mitigation of the probability of a heat-related illness and the consequences of heat-related illness. Session topics will cover: 1) the basic structure of an HIIPP; 2) program review; 3) policies that employers need for their workplaces; and 4) accepted interventions. The HIIPP requirements will be explained and expanded in the context of the new ACGIH User Guide for Heat Stress. There will be an emphasis on the recognition of exertional heat illness and appropriate prevention, first aid and emergency response to mitigate consequences.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Develop a heat stress program that considers job and personal risk factors.
• Select exposure triggers for heat stress and associated management activities.
• Develop protocols for early recognition, first aid, and emergency response.
