As extreme heat events become more frequent, managing heat stress is crucial for ensuring worker well-being and a safe work environment. EHS professionals must prioritize identifying, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling heat stress risks. The presentation will discuss: 1) the global heat stress risks associated with climate change; 2) how rising temperatures impact the EHS profession; and 3) key risk factors (e.g., environmental conditions, personal factors). This foundational understanding will aid in recognizing and managing heat-related risks across various work environments. The session covers assessing heat stress using Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) and Heat Index tools. Attendees will learn about effective control measures, such as work-rest schedules, acclimatization, and hydration strategies, supported by real-world case studies. Interactive discussions and case studies will provide actionable insights, helping EHS professionals protect their teams as temperatures rise.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Identify environmental and personal factors influencing heat stress and strain.
• Manage related risks effectively.
• Discuss OSHA's proposed heat injury and illness prevention standard.
• Align heat stress management strategies with current OSHA regulations.
• Address potential compliance challenges.
• Implement measures to meet current and future requirements.
• Explain control measures based on the Hierarchy of Controls.
• Illustrate successful implementation strategies from case studies.
