Description

Community noise monitoring is similar to occupational noise monitoring, but there are subtle differences that most industrial hygienists may not know. Community noise ordinances are established to reduce the noise impact on a resident's peace and tranquility while at home. This session will discuss: 1) community noise monitoring; 2) the differences between community and occupational noise monitoring; 3) that consideration of equipment set-up is critical in developing a sampling plan; 4) the variables that may impact data collection; and 5) results from monitoring events from different states and industries. A portion of the session will be an interactive dialog with participants, allowing for brainstorming of what could go wrong and what could have gone better.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Recognize the differences between OSHA PELs and community noise limits.
• Identify SLM data logging parameters for community noise monitoring.
• Explain the differences in measuring sound in industrial settings vs. community areas.
• Anticipate sampling challenges and pitfalls, ensuring useful data is collected.
