Education Session
Kansas City Convention Center
Room: 3501 D
CM Credit Hours: 1
Apothecary, pharmaceutical, and medical collections can be found in museums, historic houses, academic collections, private industry, government, and research institutions. Shelburne Museum in Vermont houses over 9000 objects from the 18th-early 20th century, containing narcotics, intoxicants, radioactive materials, explosives, heavy metals, and other toxins. The museum was concerned about worker and visitor exposure. To implement a management plan, the institution sought a better understanding of the collections' hazards, conditions, and overall risk. This session will discuss: 1) information from inhalation and dermal exposure assessments; 2) inventory and collection storage scenarios encountered; 3) disposal considerations; and 4) measures taken to reduce the exposure risk to staff and visitors. Learning objectives will highlight the diversity of occupational hazards and the unknowns encountered in historic collections. Detailing a process to prioritize collection hazards and risks will help industrial hygienists and other OEHS professionals, support the museum and cultural heritage community.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Identify hazards confronted by the collection care workforce.
• Collect exposure results through inhalation and dermal exposure assessments.
• Assess safety hazards and exposure risks.
• Organize and rank a large number of objects within a collection.
• Demonstrate how safety and exposure risk are integrated into hazard hierarchies.
• Manage environmental regulations affecting management and disposal considerations.
• Utilize available resources to support museum and cultural heritage sites.
• Communicate with museum professionals to establish priorities and goals.
