Description

The surge of interest in per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), has lead to the publication of numerous peer-reviewed studies. Many of these studies have explored PFAS persistence in the environment and their potential links to adverse health effects in humans. These studies highlight the complexity of human exposure to PFAS through various pathways and routes. There remains much uncertainty surrounding how humans are exposed to PFAS and the potential health risks involved. This presentation will provide a critical review of the science on dermal exposure to per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS). The review will focus on the sources of dermal PFAS exposure including consumer products (e.g., cosmetics, personal care items), and environmental contamination like household dust. It will examine the bioavailability of PFAS through skin contact highlighting key findings from recent studies and addressing the strengths and limitations of the available data. Additionally, the overall weight of evidence on the significance of dermal PFAS exposure and its potential health risks will be assessed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Evaluate dermal transfer of PFAS to the human skin surface.
• Leverage the strengths and limitations of PFAS dermal exposures.
• Recognize the knowledge gaps related to PFAS dermal exposure.
• Identify sources of dermal exposure to PFAS.
• Discuss the state of the science regarding PFAS dermal absorption.
