F8: ToxShorts — Respiratory Anatomy, Physiology, and Toxicology
Tue, 5/20: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM CDT
00401
Education Session
Kansas City Convention Center
Room: 3501 H
CM Credit Hours: 1
ToxShorts is an educational series created by the Toxicology Committee to make toxicology training content available to more AIHAConnect attendees. The respiratory system represents a critical portal of entry for inhaled contaminants. To understand and anticipate hazards, one should begin with the concepts of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system. The next step is toxicology and respiratory disease states (e.g., organic disease and those from toxic exposures). This presentation is intended to: 1) highlight workplace prototypical and emerging respiratory hazards; and 2) explain common occupational respiratory diseases through the use of examples and exercises. Handouts containing relevant reference materials and excerpts of Safety Data Sheets will be provided.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Identify the relevant structures of the respiratory tract.
• Outline the chemicals that target each structure.
• Interpret toxicological data specific to respiratory sensitization.
• Classify compounds using GHS (H) codes accurately.
• Distinguish short-term irritant effects from respiratory sensitization.
