Description

ToxShorts is an educational series created by the Toxicology Committee to make toxicology training content available to more AIHAConnect attendees. This ToxShort was created in response to student feedback requesting content on BEIs. Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs) are biomonitoring values to aid in exposure assessment. This session will begin with a discussion of biomonitoring and an explanation of clinical pathology parameters encountered in biomonitoring (e.g., urine creatinine). Through the use of case studies, this session will identify where implementation of a BEI would be beneficial and clarify that the BEI is not intended to replace conformance to an occupational exposure limit.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Identify and apply BEI values for workplace hazards.
• Distinguish BEI values based on analytical detection and an apical endpoint.
• Interpret monitoring data by comparing to established BEI values.
• List the strengths and limitations of BEIs.
