Safety discussions today often focus heavily on technology. Technological advancements (e.g., data collection, automation, sensors, and virtual reality) offer safety improvements by enhancing data insights, performing hazardous tasks, and improving training. Technology will not solve all safety challenges. In addition to technological solutions, effective safety management requires strong human competencies (e.g., critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and empathy). Personal skills help in interpreting visual data, understanding its implications, and making informed decisions. Surveys indicate that behavioral skills are increasingly valued over technical skills. Visual literacy training can enhance these skills by improving how we interpret and act on visual information, leading to better safety outcomes. Investing solely in technology limits our impact to its applications, while focusing on personal skills may neglect the benefits of technology. A balanced approach integrating technology and personal competencies ensures the most effective safety solutions and overall success.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Integrate technology and personal skills into EHS.
• Apply visual literacy to hazard identification.
• Develop strategies for enhancing personal skills.
