Description

AIHA's IHSTAT has been used by occupational hygienists around the world for the statistical analysis of exposure data for many years. The Microsoft Excel-based application was recently upgraded to align with the new AIHA Guideline Foundation Occupational Exposure Assessment Principles of Good Practice (OEA PGP). The application upgrade will improve data analysis, exposure risk decision-making, and exposure risk management. Enhancements include: a) techniques for the analysis of censored data; b) approaches to the selection of respiratory protection; and c) the ability to handle OELs expressed as a range (e.g., working OELs or occupational exposure bands). The logic for interpreting the analysis results is aligned with the OEA PGP and Rules of Thumb taught in AIHA's Making Accurate Exposure Risk Decisions webinar. This logic provides an initial proposal for exposure management actions with suggestions for follow-up monitoring, controls, and other IH program activities. Exposure visualization models that use the data analysis results to simulate a year of hypothetical exposures were added to aid in risk understanding and communication. This education session will explore: 1) the new enhancements to this statistical analysis tool; and 2) how the upgraded tool can increase the effectiveness and efficiency of exposure risk management programs.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Manage the enhancements in the new IHSTAT-macro-free.
• Use the new features to improve exposure risk management programs.
