Description

Infection control is a very important part of risk reduction in healthcare facilities. Industrial hygienists are not always included in the infection control plan at these facilities. This presentation will examine the IH's role in assisting the infection control team in reducing risks associated with microbial hazards and nosocomial infections. The presentation will examine: 1) the types of environmental samples that can be collected; 2) the sampling frequency; c) how to evaluate the analytical results from the sampling; and d) how to use the results to recommend controls. Historical data will illustrate the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of microbial hazards in the healthcare industry.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:

• Apply hazard & risk assessment tools to microbial hazards.
• Work with the infection control team at a healthcare facility.
• Choose appropriate sampling methods for specific healthcare settings.
• Collect environmental samples in a healthcare setting.
• Analyze data collected from environmental samples.
• Implement control methods to reduce nosocomial infection risks.
