PDC 404: Rethinking Your Hearing Loss Prevention Efforts
Sun, 5/18: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM CDT
P404
Professional Development Course
Kansas City Convention Center
CM Credit Hours: 7
Effective hearing conservation programs can be challenging. Noise is complex, both as a health hazard and as an interference to communication. This PDC is designed to help advance occupational hearing loss prevention efforts by identifying trends and being proactive. Topics include: a) hearing protector selection and fitting; b) verification of attenuation through fit-testing; c) assessing and addressing audibility needs; d) adopting a total hearing health approach; and e) updating audiometric testing and threshold shift analysis. Instructors will review hearing protector fitting and fit-testing techniques, research findings that support best practice recommendations, and present practical solutions to hearing conservation challenges. Interactive activities include audio demonstrations, hands-on hearing protector fitting exercises, and listening experiences.
*Registration includes boxed luncheon. **Power strips will not be provided at each attendee's seat; however, laptop charging stations will be provided in each course room.

Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Describe a best practice in hearing loss prevention programs.
• List three benefits of a hearing protector fit testing.
• Compare the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) to the Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR).
• Define how improving the signal-to-noise ratio applies to communicating in noise.
• Describe hearing protector technology designed to improve audibility.
• Identify an interactive technique intended to enhance training & motivate workers.
A PDF copy of AIHA's The Noise Manual, 6th Ed, will be provided to each participant.
Business Case/IH Value Statement
Implementation of hearing protector fit-testing has the potential to improve hearing protector use to help reduce instances of occupational hearing loss. Audibility is an important consideration when selecting hearing protectors to help improve worker safety and productivity
