CM Credit Hours: 3.5
This PDC is the second part of a two-part series on RF for IHs. The acronym, PANCAKE, stands for the 7-step assessment method: Parameters, Absorption, Near/Far Fields, Continuous/Pulsed, Antenna of Interest, Keep-Out Zone, and Exposure. This Excel tool answers the four most important questions about an RF source: Where does the far field begin? Is an RF control plan required? What is the keep-out zone distance? What is an employee's exposure at a distance X from the antenna? This course will discuss the tool aspects not covered in Part 1: 1) pulsed signal calculations and exercises; 2) how to use the tool for different types of array antennas; and 3) line loss calculations. The hands-on RF measurement practice includes a magnetic field source (that could adversely impact an implanted medical device, a radio source, and a microwave RF source. This exercise will include writing up a survey on a field survey form and entering survey results plus recommended controls in an RF control plan template. Attendees will receive a copy of the RF Excel PANCAKE tool.
*Please note: Only participants registering for two (2) half-day PDCs on the same day will receive a box lunch. **Please note: power strips will not be provided at each attendee's seat; however, charging stations for laptops will be provided in each course room.
• RF PANCAKE Excel Calculator
• Assess Pulsed Signals With Inputs Other Than Duty Cycle
• Assess an Antenna Array Other Than a Panel Antenna
• Calculate Line Losses
• Hands-on Practice With RF Survey Meters
• Survey Results on Field Survey Form
• RF Control Strategies
• RF Control Plan
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Use the RF PANCAKE Excel tool.
• Assess an array antenna other than a panel antenna.
• Calculate line losses for a more accurate RF assessment.
• Conduct an RF survey using a field survey form.
• Create an RF control plan.
• Analyze RF impact on an implanted medical device wearer.
Participants must have taken "A Gentle Approach to Radio Frequency for IHs, Part I" in one of the past four years.
Participants will receive a copy of the RF Excel PANCAKE tool and experience in how to use it. Participants will be able to identify the types of transmitting rooftop antennas and how to tailor an RF assessment and RF control plan.
Business Case/IH Value Statement
This course deepens instruction on how to perform basic RF evaluations using a 7-step model and how to use an RF Excel calculator to facilitate this model.
