Physical and chemical properties of chemicals impact the potential for inhalation and dermal exposure. Key properties will be evaluated as they relate to hazardous drug (HD) exposure. The potential for exposures to vapors from HDs has been a common misconception in the healthcare industry. This presentation will provide evidence that the vapor pressure of the NIOSH listed HDs is generally minimal and will be applied to an exaggerated exposure case study example with cyclophosphamide demonstrating extremely low exposure potential from HD vapors. This indicates that dust and aerosol evaluation is the appropriate sampling approach for potential inhalation exposure. Dermal route of exposure is of concern in the healthcare setting. The second evaluation presented here will investigate how the potential for dermal absorption of HDs contributes to a possible internal dose. Physical and chemical parameters (i.e., molecular weight, octanol-water partition coefficient, and water solubility) were used with in silico models to predict dermal absorption potential. These results can then feed into the toxicological assessment and determination of an acceptable surface limit (ASL).
