Description:
Consensus standards are critical tools for the industrial hygienist. They delineate the state of the art in protecting workers and the community from health and safety hazards and are recognized by the courts as the best choice in the hierarchy of available methods. In 2011, AIHA changed course on consensus standards involvement, from being a Standards Developing Organization itself, to representing the interests of the industrial hygiene profession on standards developed by internationally recognized consensus organizations such as ASSP, ASTM and ISO. The poster will review progress made, and current and future activities necessary to ensure the continued relevance of AIHA and its Members in the industrial hygiene consensus building process. The poster will be presented by members of the AIHA Standards Advisory Panel, and attendees will be invited to provide input to the future of AIHA standards activities.
Situation / Problem:
Since consensus standards are the state of the art in protecting workers and communities, knowing that they exist, where they can be found, and understanding how they are and were developed is critical to applying them properly. Being involved in consensus standard development will help ensure that industrial hygienists and the AIHA are thought leaders in the process of protecting workers and communities from hazards and hazardous situations.
Methods:
The poster will explain why voluntary consensus standards are important to the practice of industrial hygiene, how standards are chosen for AIHA involvement, and describe the AIHA involvement in the consensus standards development process.
Results / Conclusions:
The AIHA SAP sends Representatives and Alternate Representatives to participate in the following:
ANSI/ASSP A10 Construction and Demolition Operations
ANSI/ASSP A10.50 Heat Stress Management in Construction and Demolition Operations

Based on the selected primary competency area of your proposal, select one group below that would be best suited to serve as a subject matter expert for peer review:
(Select one)
Sampling and Laboratory Analysis Committee
Based on the information that will be presented during your proposed session, please indicate the targeted audience practice level: (select one)
Professional: Professional is a job title given to persons who have obtained a baccalaureate or graduate degree in IH/OH, public health, safety, environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, or engineering or who have a degree in another area that meets the standards set forth in the next section, Knowledge and Skill Sets of IH/OH Practice Levels, and has had 4 or more years of practice. One significant way of demonstrating professional competence is to achieve certification by a 3rd party whose certification scheme is recognized by the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) such as the Board of Global EHS Credentialing (BGC).
Was this session organized by an AIHA Technical Committee, Special Interest Group, Working Group, Advisory Group or other AIHA project Team?
Yes
If yes, please enter the name of the group below:
Standards Advisory Panel
Are worker exposure data and/or results of worker exposure data analysis presented?
No
How will this help advance the science of IH/OH?
The AIHA Standards Advisory Panel has developed a Standards Engagement Process that allows AIHA to:
* identify the consensus standards issues that are important to AIHA members and stakeholders;
* track activities pertaining to standards development that has an impact on the industrial hygiene profession and worker health and safety;
* determine the appropriate level of AIHA involvement in any such standards; and
* engage more effectively in developing and influencing standards in support of the organization’s strategic goals and objectives.
What level would you consider your presentation content geared towards?
Intermediate: Specific topics within a subject. The participant would have two (2) to ten (10) years experience in industrial hygiene or OEHS and a good understanding of the subject area, but not of the specific topic presented. Prerequisites required: another course, skill, or working knowledge of the general subject.
Have you presented this information before?
