Opioid overdose now accounts for nearly 10% of workplace fatalities, yet only 28% of employers report having naloxone readily available on-site. This gap in emergency preparedness presents a critical challenge for industrial hygienists tasked with protecting worker health and safety. To support evidence-based overdose response planning, The National Safety Council has developed the Overdose Emergency Planning Tool, a free resource designed to help organizations determine appropriate naloxone quantities based on site-specific risk factors such as square footage, public access to the site and EMS response time. This resource builds on NSC's Respond Ready Workplace initiative and aims to normalize naloxone as a standard safety measure-on par with fire extinguishers and AEDs in organizational emergency response plans.
This session will review the impact of overdose on workplace safety, the importance of integrating naloxone into emergency preparedness initiatives, the results of the research conducted by NSC to create the Overdose Emergency Planning Tool, and a demo of the tool. The session will also focus on practical steps Industrial Hygienists and Safety Professionals can take to build opioid overdose response programs in organizations.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Describe the prevalence and impact of overdose in the workplace and its relevance to industrial hygiene and occupational health programs.
• Identify key risk factors that influence naloxone quantity recommendations in various workplace settings, including workforce size, EMS response time, and public access.
• Apply the Overdose Emergency Planning Tool to assess site-specific naloxone needs and integrate overdose response into broader emergency preparedness strategies.
