Description

The labor force is changing, and workplace dynamics are evolving. The age distribution for the energy sector includes a large population under 30 than other industries at about 29% of the workforce. In 1985, about 11% of the labor force worked past retirement age (65+), but that percentage has nearly doubled in 2024 and projected to continue trending up. Workers aged 75+ is also the fastest growing segment at 9%. With a wide age dispersion in the labor force, there is an increased need to improve interactions. In particular, data points to difficulty working with the Gen Z population. An April 2023 survey from resumebuilder.com says 74% of managers think Gen Z is the most challenging generation to work with.

Young professionals often have differing perspectives and priorities than experienced professionals. Experienced professionals may benefit from understanding the motivations and mindsets behind Gen Z and young professionals can learn how to improve themselves professionally. Young professionals should become good learners, maintain professionalism, build resilience, take ownership, and seek mentorship and feedback. Experienced professionals should provide mentorship, offer flexibility when possible, and seek understanding. Overall, approaching with an attitude of curiosity and clarifying expectations around communication styles, tones, and responsiveness will improve interactions for everyone.
