Education Sessions
Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Convention Center
Room: 291
CM Credit Hours: 1
The fire service presents a unique occupational environment with complex exposure pathways and hazards. This session highlights current NIOSH research on firefighter exposures and evidence-based control strategies, including personal protective equipment, decontamination practices, and operational tactics. An emerging hazard in the fire service, lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle fires, will also be discussed with a focus on distinct exposure profiles, potential toxicity concerns, and implications for firefighter health and safety.
The presentation will also include current knowledge of firefighters' risk of cancer and introduce the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer (NFR). The NFR aims to advance our collective understanding of firefighters' cancer risk and factors associated with that risk.
Upon completion, participant will be able to:
• Recognize major firefighter exposure pathways.
• Describe the purpose and public health significance of the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer.
• Identify key contaminants and exposure concerns associated with lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle fires and their industrial hygiene implications.
