This presentation explores the intersection of Total Worker Health® (TWH) and psychosocial safety-two complementary approaches to advancing worker well-being. Drawing on NIOSH guidance, ISO 45003, and real-world case studies, it highlights how psychosocial risks such as high job demands, low autonomy, poor social support, and fatigue affect both physical and mental health outcomes, including musculoskeletal disorders. Participants will gain practical strategies for embedding psychosocial safety into safety management systems, strengthening leadership commitment, and enhancing worker engagement. Attendees will leave with actionable tools to build healthier, more resilient workplaces.
Total Worker Health® (TWH) emphasizes integrating traditional safety and health protections with broader well-being initiatives. At the same time, psychosocial risks-including heavy workloads, low job control, shiftwork, and limited social support-are increasingly recognized as key determinants of occupational health, closely linked to stress, fatigue, and musculoskeletal disorders. As workplaces continue to evolve, OEHS professionals need a holistic approach that combines hazard prevention, health promotion, and psychosocial safety. Those who apply these strategies will be better positioned to engage leadership, mitigate risks, and advance overall worker well-being.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Distinguish the core principles of Total Worker Health® and psychosocial safety.
• Examine how psychosocial risk factors influence physical health and cognitive errors.
• Apply practical strategies for integrating psychosocial safety into prevention through design, leadership, and worker engagement.
