Tue, 6/2: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM CDT
Education Sessions
Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Convention Center
Room: 291
CM Credit Hours: 1
In 2023, two-thirds of Americans reported work as a major source of stress, which is strongly linked with depression as well as other chronic diseases and disability. This session will provide occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) professionals with a comprehensive overview of stress as a workplace hazard.
We will explore how job stressors are exposures that impact individual health and organizational outcomes, with an emphasis on common sources of stress including work organization and the physical and psychosocial environment. Strategies for assessing job stress will be discussed, including both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Integrated intervention strategies at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels will be explored: preventing exposure to stressors, preventing stressors from escalating to illness while promoting health, and managing illness resulting from strain. Finally, the application of the NIOSH Hierarchy of Controls will be highlighted as a framework for designing effective job stress interventions, placing stress within the broader context of occupational hazards that require systematic control.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Explain how stress affects human health and well-being
• Analyze job stressors as exposures that influence work outcomes for individuals and organizations
• Describe potential sources of work-related stressors in the workplace
• Evaluate how to assess job stress and provide interventions at one's workplace
