H3: Occupational Exposure Banding Basics
Tue, 6/2: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM CDT
Education Sessions
Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Convention Center
Room: 288
CM Credit Hours: 1
Effective chemical safety begins with recognizing and categorizing potential hazards. When adequate toxicological data exist, a quantitative occupational exposure limit (OEL) can be established to guide safe handling. However, for substances lacking sufficient data, a traditional risk assessment and OEL may not be feasible. In such cases, occupational exposure banding offers a qualitative framework to determine appropriate control measures.
This session will introduce participants to the NIOSH Occupational Exposure Banding Process for Chemical Risk Management. Participants will gain hands-on experience applying the banding method, which is adaptable across various banding systems. Supporting materials, including excerpts from banding schemes and sample Safety Data Sheets, will be provided to facilitate learning.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Summarize the difference between qualitative and quantitative limits.
• Identify banding schemes relevant to their work.
• Demonstrate the basic principles of banding.
• Apply the NIOSH Tier 1 Banding process.
