Environmental health and safety professionals face complex, cross-disciplinary challenges spanning compliance, remediation, sustainability, and occupational health. Yet many practitioners-especially early and mid career professionals experience professional isolation and limited opportunities for leadership development. Structured mentorship offers a proven solution.
This session explores how intentional, cross sector mentorship programs strengthen the EHS pipeline by accelerating career advancement, fostering collaboration, and building adaptive leaders ready to address evolving risks. Drawing on the Environmental Facilities Management Roundtable's (EFMR) Mentorship Initiative, participants will learn practical strategies for designing effective mentorship programs, from matching mentors and mentees to setting measurable goals and sustaining long-term engagement.
Through case examples and interactive discussion, participants will examine the tangible outcomes of structured mentorship: improved talent retention, stronger cross-disciplinary problem solving, and enhanced organizational resilience. Participants will leave with actionable insights to implement or advocate for mentorship in their own organizations and contribute to developing the next generation of informed, connected, and forward-thinking EHS leaders.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Assess how structured mentorship programs build and sustain the next generation of leaders within the environmental health and safety profession
• Design sample mentorship frameworks for their own organization or network that includes mentor-mentee matching, goal setting, and measurable outcomes
• Apply strategies for sustaining mentorship relationships, including effective communication, accountability practices, and evolving career objectives.
• Analyze case examples of mentorship in action to identify key success factors and potential barriers in cross-sector EHS contexts.
• Apply advocacy skills for mentorship as a strategic tool to improve talent retention, cross disciplinary collaboration, and organizational resilience.
