In 2001, NASCAR faced a tragic turning point during the final lap of a high-speed 500-mile race, prompting a major shift in safety culture of the sport. Over the past 25 years, NASCAR has implemented numerous safety improvements in response to serious accidents and evolving industry standards commensurate with this shifted focus. These advancements-spanning vehicle engineering, track design, and driver protective equipment-have collectively made races safer for drivers, crews, and fans alike. While accidents still occur drivers are increasingly able to walk away uninjured, reflecting the effectiveness of these measures.
This session will explore NASCAR's top six safety innovations and how they have fostered a culture of safety that continues to drive progress through the checkered flag to the finish line. You don't have to be a race fan to admire how NASCAR made an extremely positive shift to the benefit of the entire racing industry.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Identify safety issues contributing to the infamous accident.
• Discuss top six safety improvements implemented by NASCAR as a result of a tragic accident.
• Apply context to the emphasis on NASCAR's positive safety culture.
