The session provides a moderated conversation examining strengths & limitations of OEHS in Serbia's transition economy. The conversation is linked to slides with talking points and maps of Serbia's geospatial characteristics of population distribution, mining, industrial, & agricultural areas. Key topics:
1. Definition of a transition economy related to underdeveloped & developed economies.
2. EUROSA (Serbia's OEHS association) & it's annual scientific conference; membership in IOHA, the influence of EU OHS directives.
3. EUROSA & Occupational Disease Prevention: How EUROSA has approached the prevention of chronic diseases, & the influence of joining the international occupational hygiene community.
4. Novel/Innovative Asbestos Research: Presentation of recent publications: Assessment of asbestos and asbestos waste quantity in the built environment of a transition country and Geospatial Assessment of Environmental Asbestos Distribution and Disaster Vulnerability in Serbia. This component focuses on research and implementing the hierarchy of controls with the goal Eliminating Asbestos-Related Diseases.
The session concludes with space for additional reflections based on open discussion with participants. This conversational format not only illustrates the specific challenges of OHES in Serbia but also transferable models for addressing hazardous materials in transition economies worldwide.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Differentiate between the characteristics of transition, developed, and underdeveloped economies in relation to OEHS.
• Identify the principal sources of asbestos presence in Serbia and relate these to similar challenges in other transition economies.
• Apply geospatial mapping concepts to illustrate how environmental hazards such as asbestos can be located, quantified, and monitored.
• Evaluate strategies used by professional associations such as EUROSA to advance OEHS capacity and align with EU directives and superior international practices.
• Explain how research on asbestos in Serbia can serve as a transferable model for addressing other hazardous materials globally.
• Formulate collaborative approaches for integrating chronic disease prevention into national and regional OEHS programs.
