L9: Lithium Battery Fire Incident Indoor Air Quality Assessment
Wed, 6/3: 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM CDT
Education Sessions
Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Convention Center
Room: 391
CM Credit Hours: 1
This session will review how a post-fire Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Assessment was conducted following a 7-hour fire that burned a Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) storage facility located adjacent to a four-story office building. The building was occupied at the time the fire started.
Initial emergency response protocols implemented will be reviewed but the main objective of this session will be to discuss various IAQ sampling methodologies used to assess the potential impact that the fire had on the building ventilation systems and occupied spaces. In addition, testing protocols had to be developed to ensure that the building was acceptable for re-occupancy, several of which go well above and beyond traditional IAQ testing methodologies.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to:
• Explain hazardous combustion products that may be released during a LIB fire.
• Apply emergency protocols used to extinguish a LIB fire.
• Assess a building ventilation system for potential LIB fire residues.
• Interpret sampling results.
• Detail how communicating risk can help in alleviating the fear of building occupants going back into the building.
